She remembers Dec case!!!!!

I spoke with a woman from Long Island. She remembers the Francis Dec case. She stated "He must have been a very smart lawyer." I further probed about news coverage at the time of the case. She said "There was a lot of coverage, and confirmed my suspicion that there was coverage on Newsday, which is a Long Island newspaper. Some one has GOT to get into those archives somehow, wouldn't you love to see the newspaper articles, Dec ophiles? She also stated, "West Hempstead is considered alot nicer than Hempstead, LI, people are much richer." Again, I want to reiterate that the Dec fraud case was a real hot topic, and she remembered it was about insurance fraud. The lady was an RN by profession.

Incredibly interesting! I knew there was someone out there who remembered Dec. Perhaps someone even knew him in real life and could attest to us what he was like as a person, supposing they'd consent to an interview? Annemartin: Any chance you could ask this woman for more information on the Dec case, and on what she remembers of it? I would be very interested in whether she actually knows (or knew) anyone who knew Dec as a person, and whether or not he was a well-known lawyer in his day, etc. If we could get a hold of someone who actually knew Dec, or even hired him as legal representation, then that would be gold. Imagine having access to someone who could really attest to what Dec was really like as a person!

The Newsday angle is another big possibility: I'm sure they would have written a story on the case, supposing it was really as big as your acquaintence claims it was. I've checked online, but I can't see they have any searchable archive of back issues anywhere on the net. I'm sure they would be able to manually search through their archives for information on the Dec case, though!

Does anyone here (IE: someone who actually lives in the US) feel up to the task of contacting Newsday and asking them about searching their archives for articles on the Dec case? If so, send me a PM on this forum, or an email to zer0 [at] bentoandstarchky [dot] com, and we'll work out the issues concerning the whole deal. I'm prepared to cover any financial expenses associated with digging up information from ND:s archives, up to a reasonable limit. I also have a few other... shall we say "keywords" (other than just Dec's legal case) that I would like them to search for at the same time, if possible. However, I would like to get an estimate from ND as to what a search would cost before I might eventually decide to undertake one, so contact me via mail or PM if you're interested and care to help out! Like I said; I'm prepared to offer full financial compensation and reimbursement, etc., if searching their archives requires money to be paid. Get in touch with me if you're interested in helping out concerning this! Smiley

I hope I run into this woman again! Usually, it's pretty clear when I meet a fellow Long Islander, (because of the accent) but this lady didn't have an accent, so it was pure luck I ran into her. I told her my interest in Dec originated because of my interest in outsider art. SOMEONE has got to get into Newsday or The Daily News, for that matter. Why should it require money to get into a newspaper archive, anyway? (and of course, Dec, like my dad, would probably call the paper "Jewsday"!) And, the media coverage probably humiliated Dec and his family.
