Come on Zer0 my man! All of us less than creative types are always wanting to know where you get your ideas and how you come up with the things that you do, so GIVE! How'd you come up with Bento and Starchky as names? Why are the characters drawn the way they are? Tell us some of your inspiration. BTW the comic is funny as heck, and I will be looking for more, when your life slows down a little!

Wow, someone actually posted in this forum!

I can't remember how I came up with the names, exactly. I think I set out to create the most incomprehensible, surreal comic possible, so thinking up the names was really just a matter of adding together two goofy-sounding names to create a single, even goofier-souding, whole.

And why the characters are drawn the way they are... I dunno. I tend to grow tired of drawing in one single style all the time after a while, so I like to experiment with many different styles from page to page. Not to mention that many of the themes in the comic are pretty disturbing, so drawing the comic in a cute cartoony style only serves to make it even moreso. I think.

Glad you like the comic! I'll be trying to add more episodes at some point in the not-so-near future. I'm plenty busy with the wacky world of Mr. Dec right now.

That is an excellent point about the cartoonish aspects of the characters lending more weight to the surreality of the cartoon considering the disturbing subjects that are covered. It does cause a disconnect in a way that makes them more memorable. Maybe, when you next draw a B & S cartoon you could have them do something with Francis E. Dec Esquire!!!! Maybe have them go on a pilgrimage to Hempstead NY, and be shadowed by "lurking assassins".

Can't say I did, actually. I basically tend to think more in visual terms than in terms of sound, etc. I basically just drew them and that was that. The only thing I was really imagining as I originally created them was what their personalities would be like. Bento was to be more serious and mature, while Starchky was to be more insane, childish and irreverant. Other than that, as stated above, I just sat down and created the comic and that was that.

And, yeah, some settings are reminiscent of Super Mario. I think I originally intended it as a sort of in-joke. Anyone who played video games in the 80s should make it out instantly! Wink
